On September 26th, I packed up and headed back south to Musgrave to once again search for the Golden-shouldered Parrot before eventually leaving the Cape area on September 27, 2006, after a fantastic 12 days of exploring the remote Cape York Peninsula. I had seen a wealth of new birds, 45 species to be exact, and seen some beautiful country. I had to cut my plans a bit short and skip Lakefield National Park but plan to return there in the upcoming weeks before traveling into Cooktown.
I feel that in the last two weeks I have gotten a small taste of this diverse tropical peninsula and really it would take many months to truly begin to see and understand the complexity of this region. Someday I would love to return during the Wet and explore the area’s rivers by boat. I also would like to spend more time photographing the Golden-shouldered Parrot and visit during the breeding season to see them at their nests in the ant mounds. It really is a spectacular region and was quite an adventure and I look forward to returning in the future.
