Weipa

Weipa is the largest town on the Cape and home to one of the world’s largest bauxite mines, run by Comalco. The town is home to about 3,500 people and many visitors who come to see the beautiful surrounding countryside, historical sites, mining tours, and fabulous fishing. My visit didn’t have such lofty goals as I was there mostly to refuel, resupply, and possibly see a few birds.

As I was only here for the night of September 21st and left very early the next morning, I don’t have much to report on the area. I did have a chance to photograph the rocky coastline that is dotted with mangroves just around Kerr Point and picked up a few new birds at Lake Patricia, just inland from there. Otherwise, it was rather uneventful. The campground was a hub of activity and most people seemed to be set up for a lengthy stay and geared for a fishing holiday.
