After a long night on the ferry, I arrived in Tasmania once again and I am quite excited. I am not exactly sure why, but I have been really looking forward to this section of the trip for quite a while. Maybe it is becuase the island offers a dozen endemic species plus a handful of other birds that are difficult to see elsewhere. Maybe it is because foxes haven't been established here so many mammal populations are still healthy. Maybe it is the spectacular landscapes. Whatever it is, I really like Tasmania and am excited about the month I get to spend here.
I hit the ground running this morning, getting off the ferry and driving all the way to Hobart. I have plans that require me in Hobart midweek next week and there are several good spots where I can photograph the endemic birds so I decided to start off down here. It took me quite a while, but I finally found the Peter Murrell Conservation Area where I had heard most of the endemics could be seen. Sure enough, a short walk yielded nearly half of them. I am a bit exhausted from a day of driving and a restless night on the ferry so didn't have much energy to photograph but I did get some images of my first Tasmanian endemic, the Tasmanian Native-Hen. Hopefully I can photograph some more birds tomorrow.
