Iawoke to a beautiful morning with quite a lot of bird activity in the area. This gave me a bit of hope that I might be able to find the Scarlet-chested Parrots I was after. However, after several hours of looking I realized that it wasn't going to happen. In the process of searching for the birds, I did manage to get a new species, a parrot in fact, just not the one I was looking for. However, seeing a flock of Blue-winged Parrots was quite nice as I wasn't exactly sure where I could find them and I will be leaving their range in a couple weeks.
Even thoughI didn't find the parrots, I had a very successful morning photographing a number of birds that up until now I have been unable to photograph. Birds like the Hooded Robin which I have seen on numerous occasions had proved difficult to photograph up until this morning. Ialso got some shots of a flock of Varied Sittellas, a White-fronted Honeyeater, and a Crested Bellbird sillouette at dawn. All of this easily made up for missing the Scarlet-chested Parrots.
After my successful morning, I headed into Gluepot which is a reserve owned and operated by Birds Australia. This is a well known site for birders and one of the few places where you can find a number of the birds of the mallee. I will be spending several days in the reserve and will talk more about it in the next few days.
