My target for this morning was the Red-lored Whistler. You may recall that I have looked for this bird in several other locations this year and so far come up empty. Gluepot is traditionally the easiest place to see the bird but it is far from easy. This year in particular the Red-lored Whistlers have been particularly hard to locate because part of the reserve burned in October of last year, displacing many of the birds. However, there has been a bird seen fairly recently along one of the tracks so I set off to see if I could find it. I spent several hours hiking up and down the track where the bird was seen but came up empty handed. At one point, I thought I had heard a bird call but it only called once so I couldn't locate it.
I finally gave up on the bird and headed back towards my car. On the way I found a family of Striated Grasswrens that proved quite cooperative in the early morning light. At least one bird took to perching up on a nice perch rather than skulking in the spinifex which made for some lovely images as you can see. Also in the vicinity was a Weebill and some other birds that made decent targets as well.
As the afternoon progressed, heavy clouds began to form which looked rather intimidating. The evening brought on some surprisingly heavy showers that went on until about midnight. Hopefully this rain will cool things off a bit as today was quite a hot day.
