I did a bit of exploring around the park today and really enjoyed the woodland. The highlight of the day though was a two hour tour of Barna Mia, a small enclosure where some of Australia's rarest small marsupials have been introduced. This is the education portion of a captive breeding program in an attempt to reintroduce some of these mammals to their former habitat. Several of them have become extinct on the Australian mainland and now can only be found on a few islands off of the west coast where foxes and cats have never been introduced. It was quite fun to sit there and see Bibies with their massive rabbit like ears and other small marsupials come in to feed, quite oblivious to us. If anyone is ever in this area, I highly recommend taking the time to go on this two hour tour. It is well worth the $13 and really the only chance to see these rare animals in their native habitat. |
