Today was my last day at the Broome Bird Observatory so I made one last attempt to see if I could find a couple of new waders. My particular target was a Terek Sandpiper but I was also quite open to seeing a Broad-billed Sandpiper (seen yesterday) or a Asian Dowitcher. Alas, despite seeing a couple thousand birds, I was not able to pick out the bird I was looking for in the hordes of Great and Red Knots. However, I did find a Beach Stone-Curlew which was a consolation prize better than the one I had missed out on! I do believe that these are quite possibly one of the strangest looking shorebirds I have ever seen and I was quite pleased to not only see this one but get a few photos as well.
By early afternoon, I had organized my car, done some grocery shopping, fueled up, and was ready to go. My original plan had been to go to Derby tonight and then start out onto the Gibb River Road tomorrow morning. As I set out all ready this afternoon, I figured Ididn't really have any need to go into Derby so simply stopped along the Fitzroy River and found a lovely bush camp. I spent a relaxing evening in the shade of some gums overlooking the gorgeous river. Tomorrow, I begin my journey across the Kimberelys!
