I spent the morning getting some chores out of the way so I will be ready to head into the West MacDonnell Ranges tomorrow. By early afternoon, I headed out to see what I could find around Alice Springs. My first stop was at the Old Telegraph Station but it was quite croweded with people out for a barbeque on a beautiful Saturday afternoon so I moved on fairly quickly. I then made my way to the local botanical gardens.
In recent years, this place has become fairly well known among the birding community as a very easy place to see Western Bowerbirds working at a bower. I found the bower quite easily after arriving and spent an hour or so sitting and watching a male tend his bower. At one point, two younger males arrived and appeared to challenge the dominant bird. There was a lot of fluffing up and chasing each other and other antics that proved quite entertaining. Unfortunately, the light was not very good so my photos didn't come out. Because of that, I will be returning there tomorrow before heading west.
