The birds were quite camera shy this morning in contrast to yesterday's bonanza of photo opportunities. It was a bit disapointing but there was nothing there that I won't be seeing more of as I enter the Top End. Eventually, I gave up and got on the road and entered the Northern Territory, the only Australian state I haven't explored yet. I didn't get very far though as I stopped in at Keep River National Park which is only a few kilometers over the border.
I didn't have many target birds at this park but I had hoped to get some better photographs of the White-quilled Rock-Pigeons that are supposed to be found here. Unfortunately, the northern campground where they are supposed to be more common was closed. Despite that, I still found a half dozen or so in the sandstone along the trail behind the Gurrandalng Campground. I had thought that these birds would be more reddish brown than the ones on the Mitchell Plateau but they looked the same to me. A quick check in the book tonight showed that Iam right on the edge of the two races, but apparently not far enough east to get the redder birds. Oh well, Iwill try again as I travel along the Victoria Highway and into Gregory National Park over the next few days.
