Masked Finch - Lake Argyle, Western Australia

Ifinally arrived in Kakadu today and while I haven't seen all that much so far, I think it is going to be a great week. Shortly after arriving in the park I went for a walk at Mamukala Wetlands. The wetlands is home to huge numbers of Magpie Geese, especially late in the Dry. Unfortunately, Iam here early in the Dry after a very wet Wet so the concentrations of waterbirds isn't going to happening as much as it will be in September and October. For instance, instead of thousands there were only a couple Magpie Geese at the wetlands today. Idid finally see a Little Bronze-Cuckoo which was a new bird but wasn't able to get any decent photos of it or anything else.

From there I moved on to Jabiru for a stop at the park Visitor Center. The center was quite impressive with a great set of displays and lots of information. I ended up spending an hour or so there and eventually left with a couple of books about the area for my reading over the next few weeks.

I planned to spend the night in the East Alligator River area so headed that way. After a relaxing midafternoon, I headed out for a walk on the Bardedjilidji Sandstone Walk. Here I was in search of some of the sandstone specialities like White-lined Honeyeater, Sandstone ShrikeThrush and Chestnut-quilled Rock-Pigeon. For most of the walk the area was silent with very little activity at all. Finally Istumbeld across a small flock of the Rock-Pigeons but they flew off before I could get any good photos. The rest of the walk was quite nice and I saw a rock wallaby which I believe was a Short-eared Rock Wallaby but will need to verify that to make sure.
