This morning I left the Grampians and headed south towards the coast. For the next week or so I will be photographing along the coast, hopefully picking up a couple target birds but mostly doing landscape work. I stopped on my way south and spent a couple hours online, updating my galleries with photos from November and the first half of December. Hopefully I can get more up in the next few days.
Iarrived in Port Fairy in the early evening and headed down to Griffith's Island to photograph the lighthouse as well as witness the arrival of the muttonbirds, or Short-tailed Shearwaters. The island is home to a massive colony of these birds and they return to their burrows just after dusk each evening. It really was quite an amazing experience watching these graceful birds flying around the dark sky. While I couldn't exactly photograph them in the dark, Idid manage to photograph a pair of Pacific Gulls during my walk around the island. These are Australia's only endemic gull and while I have seen them before, I had not photographed them until tonight.
