After the successful day yesterday, we headed out to see if we could track down a Black Honeyeater. Unfortunately, today was one of those extremely hot days where everything has hidden itself away in the shade, except of course for us birders. Despite driving all around Leeton, Keith and I were unable to come up with a single Black Honeyeater. We found lots of good habitat and even oohad a possible sighting but could not relocate the bird. We finally gave it up and headed back to Keith's, blaming our lack of success on the heat, not our lack of effort.
One thing about hot days it that birds need water and they are perfect days to sit next to water and watch birds coming in to drink in the evening. Since I left Griffith a few days back, Dave had gotten a report of both Turquoise Parrots and Diamond Firetails that were coming in to drink there. I still wanted photos of both of these birds so I headed back to Binya State Forest for the evening. To my delight, I had birds of all types coming in to drink, includin both the firetail and the parrots. Unfortunately, the parrots wouldn't come in until the sun had set, but the firetails were somewhat cooperative. Hopefully I will have another chance at the parrots in the morning.
