Bell Miner - Sheepstation Creek Campground, Border Ranges Natoinal Park, New South Wales

Border Ranges National Park is just across the border from Lamington National Park where I spent a lot of time on my way north. During that time I managed to see pretty much all of the local specialties except one, the Rufous Scrub-bird. While in Lamingon, I never searched for the Scrub-birds since I had hoped that they would be more accessible in other locations. In Lamington, a 6 kilometer hike is required to even get into the appropriate habitat while in other parks you can drive all the way into the Antarctic Beach Forests. So now, the Rufous Scrub-bird is at the top of my list for the next few weeks as I work my way back south towards Syndey.

I arrived at Border Ranges late yesterday afternoon to find that the road into the park and the places I wanted to explore was closed from the west campsite. That means in order to access those locations, I have to drive about 100 kilometers back south and around to the eastern entrance. In the meantime though I decided to explore the area and see what I could find.

There must be something about my presence in this part of the country that means it must rain since it rained for most of the time I was in Lamington and again today. Iawoke to heavy rains at about 4:00 this morning and while it cleared for a little while this morning, we were in for it in teh afternoon. By about 3:00, thunder and lightning was everywhere and the sky was getting dark. I quickly packed up anything that couldn't get wet and jumped in the truck just as the storm started. For the next half hour or so, torrential rains were accompanied by marble sized hail and lots of lightning and thunder. Fortunately the hail stopped after about 30 minutes, but the rain continued for the rest of the afternoon and into the night. Ihave no idea if it will continue tomorrow but we will just have to see.
