Powerful Owl - Chatswood, Sydney, New South Wales

This morning I joined local Sydney birder, Chris Charles, (link to site) at his home in Sydney where we spent the morning exploring the forest behind his house in search of Powerful Owls. These large owls are one of the speciatlies of the Southeast coast. Chris has been fortunate to have a pair of owls that have taken up residence in a small gully just behind his home for several years now. Each year they breed and this year they have successfully raised two young. The owls tend to roost in the same general each dayoo which makes it fairly convenient if you are trying to see them.

Without too much trouble, Chris was able to locate all four birds this morning. Fortunately, one of the juvenile birds was sitting on a perch where I could get unobstructed views which made for nice photographs. I also was able to get a few frames of the male but some branches made compositions difficult.

This afterntoon, Iheaded back north a bit to the northern suburbs where I joined local bird guide, Alan McBride. Alan and Ispent the afternoon working on his computer and talking about potential birding spots around the country for future spots. Things were uneventful until I managed to fall down a short flight of stairs. Except for a nice bruise on the side of my head and a small cut on my head and ear, I came away unheart but it did cause a bit of a commotion.
