Striated Thornbill - Gloucester Tops, Barrington Tops National Park, New South Wales

The Rufous Scrub-bird as officially beaten me. It now gets placed on the "missed" list and will require a return trip at somepoint in the future. Another few hours this morning ended up fruitless so I decided to say enough was enough and headed back to the coast.

From here, my plan was to head back to the coast and into Newcastle for a few days before heading south to Sydney. I didn't have much information about Newcastle birding but had the names of a few sites so I plotted a route into town that took me by several of these sites. This decision turned out to be fairly productive as I picked up several new species including Blue-billed and Musk Ducks at Walka Water Works and figured out my way around the area.

I ended up at a caravan park just across the water from Newcastle Harbour and had a lovely walk along the breakwater to end the day.
