Yesterday I had decided that i would not leave Bowra without having photographed at least one species of babbler as well as the Black-tailed Native-Hens which were on the lagoon. Having photographed the babbler yesterday, that left the native-hens. I decided to dedicate the afternoon to them and these birds proved to be very elusive. While about 30 of them were present, I could never get close enough to photograph an individual as they alwyas seemed to keep their distance from me. I tried to photograph the flock but they were always feeding and I couldn't find a pleasing image among them. Finally, two nearby kangaroos got into a small squabble and all the birds looked up at once to see what was going on. I was able to isolate one small section of the flock and got the above image. It wasn't the image I had in mind but is different than many of my other images and I really like it.
So, with having photographed both the babblers and native-hens as well as several other birds I will be hitting the road again tomorrow. Ihad originally planned to take a bit of an obscure route back towards Brisbane so I could stop at another waterhole where I had heard Red-winged Parrots were nesting. Since I hadn't photographed them yet, I wanted to try that spot. However, this morning I was able to photograph several Red-wings as they were feeding in a tree on the edge of the waterhole so that means I can take a bit more of a direct route to the coast. It probably will be a two day drive as I will take it easy and it looks like rain is forecast so I think it will be a good couple days of travel. I also hope to get this weblog updated tomorrow before hitting the road as well as posting new images to the gallery section. Enjoy!
