Tody was spent sitting at Cumberland Dam, just west of Georgetwon where I arrived yesterday. My original plan was to photograph this morning and then move on to Karumba but after a productive morning and then the discovery of a second watering hole, Idecided to stay on for another day. Funny how it is only the second day on my Outback Queensland trip and I am a day behind already. Oh well, thats the fantastic part about this year.
This morning I spent several hours sitting on the side of the lagoon formed by the small dam. I was ableto photograph several new species which was very nice. On my way back to my truck to get on the road, I checked a small pool that has formed on the downtstream side of the dam and realized that it was being used by a variety of songbirds as a place to drink. I stopped to take some photos but the light was pretty harsh already. Since there were good birds there, I decided to stay and give it a try tomorrow morning.
The rest of the day was spent hiding from the sun under the canopy of two extremely friendly and kind travellers that were spending a few days at the dam. It made for an enjoyable afternoon before I returned to do a bit of scouting at the small pool to see what I should expect for the morning. There were at least 20 different species coming in to drink, including my target bird for this spot, the Black-throated Finch. Hopefully tomorrow Ican get some good photos.
