Golden-shouldered Parrot - Artemis Station, Cape York Peninsula, Queensland

When I first started planning this project and learned about the Golden-shouldered Parrot, it became one of the birds Imost desired to see and photograph during my year. Despite this desire, I had my very strong doubts on whether or not I would see the birds, much less photograph it. Well, today that dream came true!

As I got out of bed this morning and started to set up my camera, Iwas amazed to find a flock of Golden-shouldereds just above my car in a tree. Over the enxt two hours, the birds moved from tree to tree and eventually to the ground to feed. I was amazed out how accomodating they were, allowing me to take my fill of photos. Iwas able to photograph both males and females and as you can see from the photo of th emale above, it isn't hard to understand where they got their name.

After photographing the parrots, I decided to change my plans a bit. Instead of heading into Lakefield National Park for a few days and then heading back south to more built up areas, I would head south today. This would allow me to get the noise in my car fixed this week, instead of having to wait through the weekend as would have ahppened had I left on Friday as planned. Also, when I go back to Lakefield, probably next week, I will be able to travel through the park, entering on the west and exiting out the east into the Cooktown area making for a more pleasant trip through the park. Overall, I think this will be a much nicer way to do things and will allow me to get some of the work out of the way this week.
