I had a bit of an odd day today. The morning ended up being rather frustrating photographically for a wide variety of reasons, but the afternoon and evening turned out to be quite nice. I did get to photograph a couple new birds, one of which was endemic. After a frustrating morning I ended up coming back to my campsite and just spending the day around here doing some work but mostly just reading my book and photographing the local birds. Tomorrow I am going to get out and do some more exploring and see more of the park that I haven't seen yet. Hopefully, I will have more to report tomorrow.
Today's photos is a Large-tailed Nightjar that was sitting on a nest just off to the side of the road. If some other birders hadn't told me about it I never would have found it as the camoflage is absolutely amazing. I showed it to a couple other birders this evening and from about 4 meters away, it took over a minute for everyone to see it as it sat pretty much in the open. While it is not an endemic, Ilike the photograph and it was my 275th species for the year. That is quite amazing to me considering I have been birding in the US for over 15 years and have only seen just over 350 species. I imagine I will pass that mark by my birthday which is towards the end of next month.
