Another day of birding full of new birds and this time, great photos of multiple species. After struggling to get out of bed this morning, I headed up to the area around Mt. Lewis. Here there is a relatively easily accessed piece of higher altitude rainforest that holds a nice variety of birds that are difficult to find elsewhere. While I saw nearly all of my targets, I was even able to photograph a couple of them. The Fernwren (above) in particular was very cooperative as it decided to perch on a small log on the forest floor and sing for about 90 seconds. Singing birds are fantastic to photograph becuase not only do you get a big of action, the bird holds relatively still. At least it isn't moving around from branch to branch constantly like many small birds do.
After an afternoon of photogrpahin around the park, we headed off on another spotlighting trip to try and see some of the local owls and mammsl. Tonight's trip made up for the lack of stuff we saw on yesterday's trip. We did manage to have decent views of the local Masked Owl that has been nesting across the street as well as a White-lipped Tree Frog (2nd largest frog in Australia), a Long-nosed Bandicoot, White-tailed Rat, Bush Rat, and the highlight as far as mammals go, a Long-beaked Echidna. It was quite a nice walk and I was glad that I had the opportunity to do it.
